Appreciating the tech aspect of editing

Thank you for your amazing assistance and the excellent advice you have given me over the years. You taught me how to use the technology to organise my thoughts with one of the most helpful tools, and generateing-ideas brainstorming techniques you provided. Aside from Mendeley digital referencing app, where I need practice, I value the knowledge I have gained on how to structure my sentences so that my tone/voice is understood and my research arguments are straightforward to follow.

I have not listed everything there is to list, such as punctuations, how to start a sentence, which terms to use etc. The aforementioned items, however, are at the top of my list.

This is why I do it

Wow, you are a machine Tanya! I’ve been up since 3 working … your structuring has allowed for my thinking to flow and formulate a better, clearer, and more professional essay … I’m so grateful I took the chance to ask for your assistance … You have no idea how much you have assisted me with this …🙏🏼

Gosh. Thank you for saying that. And I had the same experience! I am in Flow thanks to working with your work. Just reading is so disengaging. But when editing I really engage. Fruitful collaborations!

Surpassing

Two issues stand out about your work. Both are unique and surpass the work of any editor/proofreader that I have worked with in my career.

The first is the detailed ‘grammar lessons’ that accompany your suggestions in the text. I have encountered only one editor that does something similar but not in your format. I would describe your format as a ‘collegial get your bum off your seat’; it’s motivating and makes one sit up and take notice.

The second issue is that you send students back if they have not even done the minimum – I love that – you are not here to write for them. Students must at least do their own basic spelling and grammar checks and proofread their work before submitting it to your office.

Rudi de Lange
Professor Emeritus

I asked for a list of things that the students were finding useful about my work, and I got high praise from respected colleagues. Thanks Rudi, I can’t tell you how much this means to me.

A most prolific writer whose first and last papers I edited were chalk and cheese

I would say your astute editing transformed my draft into a polished gem, skilfully enhancing clarity and flow of my articles. Your keen eye caught nuanced inconsistencies, ensuring a seamless narrative in most of my published articles. Your invaluable input breathed life into my character and elevated my emotional resonance. To be honest, Tanya, you’re the secret weapon every writer dreams of!

Your guidance has been transformative. You have taught me to dissect complex concepts with precision, and your mentorship has instilled a profound confidence in engaging in scholarly discourse. I have progressed from struggling with grammar and constructing arguments to confidently executing them with minimal supervision.

Thank you for being a beacon of knowledge and support.

A student-centred academic

You’re amazing. That’s it. That’s the message. Thank you! I know I cannot always have you. But when I can, what a pleasure. I appreciate this very very much.

Francine Van Tonder
University of Pretoria

The admiration is mutual. : ) Thanks Francine!

A little stiff, but the word ‘greatly’ made me feel good : )

“A language practitioner was appointed in the dean’s office to assist staff and students with postgraduate academic writing. The language practitioner assisted with editing articles, and theses dissertations, as well as provided assistance and training related to technical editing, formatting of documents, and the utilisation of reference tools. The contributions of the language practitioner greatly enhanced the quality of the academic project.”
